I began working with apples this way in 1989, where I cut an apple in half and pour plaster on top of it, which then dries and shows a process of an apple rotting and changing it's shape. This type of work has been done several times since then, however never shown in an actual exhibition.
I had planted four apple trees when I finished building my studio in An sung, November 2001. I planted one of them near by the studio building, and it is one of my big pleasures to look at the young, beautiful barely green fruits on the tree. As the fruits began to ripe, I felt an urge to work on this idea again. I began when the apples were just shaping, however lately the apples have grown as big as a child's fist.
The pleasure of this work is looking at the perfectly moist and well alive section of an apple, which dries up and shrinks, leaving fingernail-thick gaps between itself and the plaster, letting light slip into them.
This apple work will be left eventually as space, recording the changing process of the shape of apples. (It could be thought as same concept with 'Pumpkin' which was done in 2005.) Special qualities of using natural objects is that it is able to observe the changes of it's shape and color through the art work.
Through this work, an apple comes into my work for a period by a simple approach, and shows the realness and richness of nature, even through drying and decaying. The plaster space operates both artificiality and natural at the same time, as it contains nature within itself. The Apple forms its own small space and forms a miniature natural world. In here lies a part of the huge course of nature, changing rapidly and in infinite variations.
I am planning to perform this work with visitors of the gallery. I would like to feel the beauty of the original shape of objects, and the time which changes the shape of space looking at the plain section shape of an apple with them.
I would like to think about law of nature; that our body will be disappear like an apple, drying and decaying, and about special creature as human beings, who also leaves spaces in the minds others in this world.

사과의 공간
사과를 반으로 갈라 유리판위에 엎어 놓고 석고를 부은 다음 석고와 사과 사이에 생기는 공간과 색채의 변화 그리고 사과의 형태가 변해가는 과정을 작품 속에 담아내는 이번 작업은 1989년 처음 시도하였다. 그 이후에도 여러 차례 시도하였으나 공식적인 전시를 통하여 발표 된 적은 없었다.
2001년 11월 안성 작업실을 마련한 후 사과나무를 심었다. 네 그루 중 한 그루는 집 가까이에 심었는데 나무에 달린 희뽀스름한 푸른 사과를 보는 즐거움이 컸다. 올해 본격적으로 사과가 달리기 시작하면서 이 작업을 다시 해보고 싶은 생각이 들었다. 사과가 손톱만한 크기로 자랐을 때 시작하였는데 이제는 제법 어린아이 주먹만큼은 커졌다.
이 작품의 작업으로서의 묘미는 촉촉한 속살 맛이 살아있는 사과의 단면이 석고 속에서 완전한 평면으로 다가 올 때와 며칠 지나 석고와 사과 사이에 자란 손톱만큼 틈이 벌어져 빛이 스며드는 공간이 생겨나는 것을 보는 것이다.

이번에 제작되는 사과 작업은 열매의 크기의 변화가 시간에 따라 기록되어 결국 공간으로 남을 것이다. 자연물의 자람과 그 변화을 작업 속에 직접 담아내는 이 작업은 몇 해전 호박잎 작업*의 연작으로도 생각될 수 있겠다. 생생한 자연물의 형태와 색채가 변해가는 것을 작품 속에서 지속적으로 볼 수 있다는 것이 자연물을 이용한 작업의 특성이라고 할 수 있다. 이 작업을 통해 자연물인 사과는 간단한 방법을 통해 나의 작품 안으로 들어와 일정기간 작품으로 존재하며 건조와 부패의 과정을 통해서도 그 생생하고 풍부한 자연성을 보여준다. 자연을 담아내는 석고 공간은 인위적 장치의 성격을 띠게 되지만 그것도 사과라는 원형의 흔적이다.

석고 속에 자기 공간을 만들고 그 속에서 변해가는 사과의 작은 자연계를 본다. 세월 따라 변화무쌍한 공간을 만들어내는 대자연계의 만물들의 역사의 일단이 여기에 있는 것이다.
이번 사과 작업은 전시장에서 관람자들과 함께 직접 작업을 해 볼 생각이다. 나는 석고의 표면과 나란한 사과의 단면의 모양을 그들과 함께 보면서 만물이 가지고 있는 그 고유한 형태의 아름다움과, 공간의 형태를 풍부하게 만들어 내는 시간에 대해서 함께 느껴 보고 싶다.
우리들의 몸도 사과처럼 쪼그라들어 결국 현실 너머로 사라져간다는 자연계의 일반적인 질서와, 함께 살았던 사람들의 마음속에 그 어떤 공간을 더불어 남기게 되는 인간이라는 특별한 존재에 대해서도 생각해 보고 싶다.
